
Extract from the will of Robert Newman 1682
In the name of God Amen the thirtieth Day of August In foure and thirtieth years of the Reigne of our Souv[er)aigne Lord Charles the Second By the grace of God of England Scotland France & Ireland King Defender of the Faith &c Anno Dom[ini] 1682. I Robert Newman of Dorking in the County of Surrey gent[leman] being sickly and diseased in Body But of Sound mind & good memory praised be the Lord therefore doe make and declare this my last will and testament And first and principally I will and bequeath my soule into the hands of Almighty God my creator trusting by the only Meritts Death and passion of my Deere and only Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ to have free and full pardon and remission for all my sins And to enjoy eternal happiness with those that are forever Blessed in the kingdom of heaven And I will my Body to the Earth from whence it was derived to be decently and Christianly buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named And as touching such temporal estate as the Lord in this world hath Lent me I give and bequeath the same In manner and form following And first Whereas I have surrender[ed] all my Customary Messuages tenem[en]ts Lands and pr[e]misses into the hands of the Lords of the Mannor of Dorking & Capell wh[i]ch are within the said Mannor to the use of my Last will and Testam[en]t as I shall give & bequeath the same thereby I give and bequeath unto Ann my beloved wife All those my tenem[en]ts w[i]th the barns neere unto them adjoining and the garden orchard nursery and all other the appurtences there unto belonging situate standing lying & being at the very end of Ram alias Chergate Lane near unto Cotmandene adjoining and in the tenure & occupation of me the said Robert Newman Edward Nightingall Thomas Croucher Joane Basley Joshua Arron & James Parrish to have & to hold all & singular the said pr[e]misses unto Ann my said wife for the terme of her life And from and after her decease I give & bequeath all the aforesaid tenem[ent]ts barns & pr[e]misses w[i]th the appurtences unto my sonn Robert Newman to have & to hold unto hime & his heires & assigns for ever Item I will & bequeath more unto An my said wife the sum of five pounds p[er annum] during the terme of her life out of my tenement & lands called Trashurst in Dorking aforesaid Item I give & bequeath also the sum of fifty shillings p[er] annum more unto An my said wife to be paid her halfe yearly by even & equal portions out of all those my tenem[en]t garden orchard nursery & pr[e]misses situate & being at the east end of the towne of Dorking aforesaid in the tenure or occupation of John Price Thomas Maidman Widd[o]w Carrell & Thomas Roffey And the first halfe years pay[men]t to my said wife out of all the tenem[en]ts & Lands aforesaid to commence from the day of my death Item I will & bequeath more unto Ann my said wife the one halfe of all my household goods And the other halfe to my sonn Robert Newman to be equally divided betweene them.
